The Holiday Season: A Celebration of Light
November 07, 2022
In the northern hemisphere, the winter solstice of 2022 will occur on December 21 at 10:48 p.m. Central European Time. This day will be the shortest of the year and it is not a coincidence that it falls during the holiday season. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year... The festivities follow one another around the winter solstice because originally what we all celebrated was the power of light.
Celebrating Light, Rebirth and Life
Have you heard of the festival of Yule? This traditional Celtic celebration is the "ancestor of Christmas". Many of our end-of-year rituals find their roots in these pagan ceremonies. Yule celebrated the shortest day of the year as a symbol of the rebirth of the sun, of the light that returns and keeps increasing until the summer solstice. We understand why light has an essential role in our end-of-year celebrations. Even the traditional Christmas dessert, the log, is a perpetuation of the Yule tradition: finding the largest log of wood was a way to spread light during these short days.
A Moment for Intimacy with Oneself
While nature slows down and animals hibernate, we feel a natural need for cozy atmospheres and intimate moments. In the Chinese philosophy of yin and yang, the winter solstice is the most yin day of the year. The yin energy is about interiority and slow to help our body regenerate and recharge before the yang energy of the spring. This period is a symbol of spiritual renaissance, a moment where we find in ourselves the energy for new projects. A book, a play and a candle-mode set Voltra lamp will create the perfect yin atmosphere.
The Right Lighting for Intimate Festivities
A circle of close friends sharing laughter and joy around a candlelit table. A family reunited, sharing gifts around an illuminated tree. The holiday season is also a moment of sharing and celebrating together. Dimmed light makes these precious moments even more intimate. The warm color of Voltra's cordless lamps and their unique candlelight make them the perfect companion for celebrating the power of light, rebirth and life.
